Manila's Jollibee Eyes More Fastfood Buys in China

Jollibee Foods Corp., the Philippines' biggest fastfood chain, said on Thursday it planned to buy three more fastfood brands in China to take advantage of growth prospects in the world's fourth largest economy.

Jollibee, which outsells McDonalds and KFC in its home market, already operates two fastfood brands in China -- fastfood chain Yonghe King and tea house Chun Shui Tang.

Jollibee owns Yongke King, which has about 106 outlets in China. The Manila-based firm operates Chun Shui Tang under a franchise agreement with Taiwanese partners.

"Maybe we can also have five brands in China considering the population there...Maybe we could do that in the next two to three years," Tony Tan Caktiong, Jollibee chief executive, told reporters.

The Jollibee group, which owns five fastfood brands domestically, is expanding aggressively overseas as part of a strategy to become a major regional fastfood company in Asia.

Tan Caktiong said the group was also looking at Saudi Arabia and Riyadh as possible expansion targets. Jollibee also plans to open a branch of its flagship hamburger and chicken chain in Jakarta, where it already operates five outlets of its Chinese fastfood brand Chowking.

Jollibee owns pizza-pasta chain Greenwich, Red Ribbon bakeshop, and an upscale delicatessen DeliFrance locally.

Tan Caktiong said the group's second quarter performance was showing strong results based on initial data.

"In April and May, we did very strong and we are all very optimistic that the second quarter will sustain the first quarter's growth," he said.

The group's chief finance officer told Reuters last month that Jollibee's first half net profit was likely to have grown around 18 percent from a year ago, mainly due to election spending and a stronger domestic economy.

In the first quarter this year it posted net income of 529 million pesos, up 18 percent from the same period of 2006.

Shares of Jollibee jumped 4.72 percent on Thursday, outperforming the main index which gained 1.89 percent.

Nestle Opens New Milk Factory in China

Nestle today inaugurated a new state-of-the-art milk factory in Erguna, near Hulunbeir, in the Chinese Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The ceremony took place in the presence of the regional authorities and Mr. Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Chairman and CEO of the Nestle Group.

At least 200,000 people benefit directly and indirectly from Nestle milk activities in China. Mr. Brabeck-Letmathe said: "I am proud of this pioneering new investment that we have made in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and I want to express my gratitude to the authorities, both at national and local level, for their continuous support and fruitful cooperation."

U.S. bans some seafood imports from China over cancer fears

The banned species include catfish, shrimp, eel, basa — a kind of catfish — and the carp-like dace. The FDA is not ordering the seafood out of restaurants or to be pulled from supermarket shelves, but said all incoming products would be banned immediately. The chemicals found in the food "could cause health problems if consumed over a long period of time," said David Acheson, the FDA's assistant commissioner for food protection.

The ban follows several months of concerns over food and drug imports from China that came to light with the discovery of tainted pet food in March, which led to manufacturer recalls of more than 100 brands and numerous pet deaths. Food from China meant for humans in the U.S. — such as mushrooms, plums and scallops — has been blocked from import by the FDA, which rejects about 200 shipments per month from China.

"There is no imminent threat to the public," Acheson said. He added that the Chinese government has been working to improve inspection of their farmed seafood exports, but not enough to prevent the new ban.

The toxins found in fish targeted by the FDA include a chemical called malachite green, which is used to treat fungal infections, Acheson said, and has caused cancer in laboratory animals. Fluoroquinolones, also found in the Chinese fish, can increase antibiotic resistance, the FDA said.

The problems date to before 2001 and the FDA had banned individual Chinese manufacturers found to be exporting tainted fish. But heightened FDA inspections over the past several months have found that as much as 15 percent of the banned seafood contained the harmful chemicals, leading to the countrywide ban.

"We don't know how much of this product is in the country," said Margaret O'K. Glavin, the FDA's associate commissioner for regulatory affairs.

Shrimp and catfish are among the 10 most popular seafood consumed by Americans, the FDA said.

Chinese manufacturers must clear numerous FDA hurdles involving third-party inspections before their fish will be allowed back in the U.S., the agency said.

Because of the low cost of farming and processing, the West has increasingly looked to China for food and drugs in addition to manufactured goods. The U.S. imported $2.3 billion worth of agricultural goods from China last year, compared with $133 million in 1980.

    2007-06-30 11:03:20

DSM, Buhler to start production of fortified NutriRice kernels

    By Jess Halliday

27/06/2007 - DSM and Buhler today announced the opening production facility of their Chinese joint venture Wuxi NutriRice Co, marking the imminent start of the first commercial production of nutritionally-enriched rice kernels for mixing with natural rice.

In conceiving the joint venture, DSM brought to the table its experience in nutrient formulation, while Buhler, a process engineering firm, brought advanced technology in grain processing and food extrusion.

Production is expected to commence at the facility in August, with an initial limited capacity to enrich around 80,000 tonnes of rice. "As the first facility of its kind, it is primarily intended for market development and it is anticipated that the capacity will be increased in the coming years."

    The development and production of
NutriRice is expected to help improve the health and nutritional status of the Chinese population, for which rice is a staple product but where nutritional deficiencies still exist, particularly in iron and vitamin A. When people have enough to eat but their food is of poor nutritional value, they are said to suffer from "hidden hunger". This means they may still suffer from malnutrition, which can result in poor productivity or blindness.

Moreover, as roll out is intended on a global basis, Wuxi NutriRice is expecting to create new opportunities for the rice industry in general. It plans to market the enriched kernels to rice millers and retailers, opening up the possibility for product differentiation on an enhanced health platform.

Part of the problem with rice is that many of the natural nutrients in rice tend to be lost during rice-whitening and polishing process, so that milled rice has a lower micronutrient profile than unmilled rice. Vitamins and minerals can also be "washed off" in the traditional rice-rinsing process, according to DSM.

The NutriRice process, which has been patented, involves the encapsulation of micronutrients within the kernel. Candidates for encapsulation include vitamins A and B, and iron and zinc, and multiple nutrients can be included in each kernel.

Besides boosting the nutrient profile, the process is also said to boost bioavailability and stability, so that more of the vitamins and minerals are retained during storage.

DSM has indicated that research into the technology behind NutriRice is on-going.

"The company will carry out further research in the field of rice enrichment to better fulfil the nutrient and health needs of the people worldwide," said Stephan Tanda, a member of DSM's managing board of directors.

For several years now DSM has been running a Nutrition Improvement Program, which revolves around providing technical and scientific support for supplementation programmes around the world, and fortifying staple foods with essential vitamins and minerals.

    China rejects tainted U.S. food

By Audra Ang, Associated Press Writer  |  June 26, 2007

Chinese inspectors have seized shipments of U.S.-made orange pulp and dried apricots containing high levels of bacteria and preservatives, the government said Tuesday.

The move appeared to be the latest attempt by China to show it is not the only country with food export safety problems.

Local departments have been ordered "to strengthen quarantine and inspections on food imports from America," according to a notice announcing the seizures posted on the Web site of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, China's main food safety monitor.

Importers have been asked to "make sure that food safety requirements are met in contracts when importing U.S. food so that trade risks are lowered," the notice said.

The orange pulp and apricots were seized in the eastern province of Shandong and the southern boomtown of Shenzhen, the notice said.

The pulp, from the Modern Skill Co. Ltd., and the fruit from Vacaville, California-based Mariani Packing Company Inc., contained "excessive bacteria, mold and sulfur dioxide," the notice said without elaborating.

It also did not give any details on when the seizures took place, how big the shipments were or in which city each shipment was seized.

The safety administration notice said the pulp was still being processed but that the apricots had been destroyed. Sulfur dioxide is sometimes used as a preservative in dried fruit.

A man who answered the telephone at the safety administration said he had no more details beyond what was on the Web site.

A security guard who answered the phone at Mariani Packing said the office was closed and there was no immediate response to messages left seeking comment.

In recent months, U.S. inspectors have banned or turned away a growing number of Chinese exports containing high levels of toxins or potentially deadly chemicals, including frozen fish, juice and toothpaste.

Seizures and public fears over the safety of Chinese food threaten billions of dollars worth of exports, prompting the government to emphasize that such problems are individual cases, not systemic, and that other countries have similar issues.

Safety officials have toughened standards and export controls, but also prominently announce rejections of imports, apparently to turn the tables on critics.

Earlier this month, inspectors in the ports of Ningbo and Shenzhen turned away or destroyed shipments of health supplements and raisins because they said the products did not meets safety standards.

Health Risk Posed by Disposable Dishes

    (China.org.cn by Huang Shan, June 20, 2007)

A recent inspection by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) uncovered the worryingly poor quality of disposable dishware in China with nearly 50 percent found to be sub-standard. The result revealed that the quality of plastic disposable boxes, bowls and trays used in instant food was most unsatisfactory.

The disposable boxes, bowls and trays surveyed were found to be constituted of plastic scraps with chemical additives. When heated, these can often release pathogenic substances, which if ingested, could have impacts ranging from acute food poisoning to causing cancer.

GAQSIQ stats have also shown the low-quality used in the foodstuff packaging industry. Among the 3,700 enterprises involved in the industry, 1,100 of them have less than 10 employees. Due to this lack of staff and with shabby working conditions, their product quality suffers and constitutes a public health risk.

Last September, GAQSIQ initiated a new market admittance system for plastic package, containers and tools intended for food use. Starting from August, the quality watchdog will mete out tough punishment to any enterprise found without a production license. Enterprises currently applying for one should clearly label their products as "trial products" pending official acceptance. These should also be submitted to quality checks before they enter the market. Those who have not filed an application must cease all production at once.

Evidence that the government will force enterprises to adhere to the highest standards can be seen in Guangdong Province where out of 77 companies who have applied for a production license, only one had been granted with the license by June 18 while 11 more had passed spot inspections.

According to the Guangdong Province Quality and Technical Supervision, the application process includes a preliminary examination of submitted materials, spot inspection and sampling inspection, lasting 60 working days in total.

In addition to plastic dishware, GAQSIQ will also launch market admittance systems for food-stuff packaging of other materials, such as metal, paper and porcelain.

    Philippines recalls baby milk

THE Philippine government has ordered the recall of millions of cans of infant formula made by American-based company Wyeth because they may have been contaminated at a Philippine warehouse during a storm last year, officials said yesterday.

The Bureau of Food and Drugs served the order on Tuesday for Wyeth to recall 4.3 million cans and cartons of its powdered baby milk, Health Undersecretary Alexander Padilla said.

He said the order was made after verifying confidential information that the baby milk had been exposed to the elements during a powerful typhoon in the Philippines last year, but not immediately recalled.

Wyeth, however, insisted the quality of the milk powder was not affected, and that only the packaging had been damaged in the storm.

The recall order came the same day the Supreme Court heard arguments on whether to allow health officials to impose stringent measures against what they call aggressive advertising by foreign milk companies, which has many women believing infant formula is better than mother's milk.

Joshua Ramos, deputy director of the Bureau of Food and Drugs, said up to 4.3 million units of the infant formulas Bonna, Bonakid, Bonamil, Promil, Promil Kid, Promil Gold and Progress Gold may have been contaminated in the storm. A unit is defined as being a can or a carton.

Wyeth said in a statement that it identified rusty spots on the outer rims of some cans during a routine inspection at a warehouse in July 2006 following typhoon Milanyo.

Chinese Company Fingered for Selling Rotten Zongzi

A company in east China's Anhui Province has been fined 50,000 yuan (about US$6,500) and ordered to cease production of glutinous rice dumplings, known as zongzi in Chinese.

The 9,400 kilograms of zongzi seized in the company's workshops and in local markets will be destroyed in public, and the company's hygiene permit will be revoked, which means the company is forbidden to produce food, according to a decision made by the city's Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau in the provincial capital of Hefei on Tuesday afternoon.

Wanmaomao Frozen Food Co. was caught repackaging old dumplings produced two years ago. Acting on a tip off, the bureau raided the company on Sunday.

"The dumplings had gone bad. They were black in appearance and smelled to high heaven," said Wu Wei, an official with the bureau.

Wu said the company rented an ice house in a meat-processing plant in the city and stored about 8,800 kilograms of two-year-old zongzi there.

They had repackaged about 800 kilograms of the old zongzi and sold them in Taihu and other cities in the province. Police said that all the products sold that were past their use-by date had been recovered.

"In their leave coverings, it's very hard to distinguish bad dumplings from new ones, so we decided to recall all 'Wanmaomao' brand products," said Wu.

Zongzi, a traditional snack made of glutinous rice and various fillings and usually wrapped in reed leaves, is traditionally eaten during the "dragon boat festival". Chinese people have been celebrating the "dragon boat festival" for almost 2,300 years.

The leaves used to wrap the problematic zongzi had a high copper sulfate or copper chloride content to give them a bright green appearance.

Wu said the company had won a "famous trademark of Hefei" award in 2003 as well as an "enterprise exempt from inspection and examination" certificate.

"We have asked the authorities to revoke the award and the certificate," said Wu.

Company management was unavailable for comment at press time.

Cadbury bids JPY13.75 billion for Japanese candy firm

    18th June 2007By Leah Vyse

UK confectionery group Cadbury Schweppes has revealed that is making a recommended tender offer for Sansei Foods Company, a Japanese functional candy company.

Sansei sells sugarfree functional candy in Japan under the Teicalo and Xylicrystal brands and according to Cadbury, in 2006, it had a 4% share of the GBP1 billion Japanese candy market. The offer values Sansei's issued share capital at JPY13.75 billion (GBP57 million).

Commenting on the move, Todd Stitzer, CEO, said: "Sansei's sugarfree high functionality products are complementary to Halls, and we see strong opportunities to develop them further in the Japanese market and potentially elsewhere. The acquisition of Sansei will further strengthen our presence in Japan, where we have gained significant gum market share since the Adams acquisition."

The tender offer is being made by Cadbury Schweppes' subsidiary, Cadbury Investments Japan and is for all of the outstanding shares of Sansei. The offer price of JPY2,750 per Sansei share is a premium of 68.7% to the closing price of Sansei shares on the Osaka Stock Exchange on June 15, 2007.

Cadbury said the offer is due to close on July 19, 2007 and will lapse unless shares representing at least 66.67% of Sansei's issued share capital are tendered.

Sansei and its top shareholders have agreed to the deal.

Pepsi puts a seal of faith on brands

    RATNA BHUSHAN

    TIMES NEWS NETWORK
    [ TUESDAY, JUNE 19, 2007 12:05:27 AM]

It happened four years ago, but the impact is such that it seems like yesterday. The famous pesticides-in-cola brouhaha of 2003 that alienated consumers and led PepsiCo global boss Indra Nooyi to question the handling of the issue in India has made Pepsi India take an extreme step. The company has decided to stamp a quality assurance seal which reads: ‘One Quality Worldwide’ across all its product labels, a first for a soft drink giant anywhere in the world.

The quality seal will appear on labels of its carbonated beverages, non-carbs, flavours, Tropicana juices, sports drink Gatorade and Aquafina water. PepsiCo is also in discussions with its snack foods arm Frito-Lay India to put the same seal on its snack foods labels. The quality seal seeks to assure Indian consumers that the quality of PepsiCo’s products sold in the country is the same as those sold in the US and other parts of the world.

India is the only country where PepsiCo is being compelled to put the quality assurance upfront, trying to drive home that it does not differentiate on the quality of its products across markets.

Speaking to ET, PepsiCo India’s executive director (marketing) Punita Lal said: “Since the controversy hit only India, no other country needs such a quality assurance. The pesticide issue left the consumer questioning our quality.”

The new labels across all servings — returnable glass bottles, PET bottles and cans — will roll out in six weeks’ time. This is possibly the first tangible step the company is taking after the pesticide controversy, though it did run a few ad campaigns. One of them even showed the then chairman Rajeev Bakshi talking about the products being “safe”.

Colas (Pepsi in this case), which used to account for 60% of PepsiCo India’s volumes before the pesticide issue, now contribute about 40% to the company’s total volumes. Marketing spends on colas, too, are down from 80% of its annual budgets a couple of years ago, to 60% at present.

In a recent interview to the US-based BusinessWeek, PepsiCo Inc’s CEO Indra Nooyi had stated that PepsiCo India’s marketing strategy made matters worse for the company when it was battling the pesticide controversy. Ms Nooyi blamed herself for not handling the pesticides controversy properly, for letting things out of hand, and said she should have been in India to propagate the safety of the company’s soft drinks.
